I'll tip ya

Is it ever expected that when you pick up Take Out food that you tip? We frequent this chinese food place in the city fairly regularly, and I always seem to get a cold response when I take my change. Yesterday the guy almost shoo'd me out of the place. The price of the meal was $18.76, I gave him a 20, he went back to get change, comes back, gives me a look as I take the change, and says "bye bye" sweeping his hand towards the door. I was offended a bit.

Do you think I should have been? Do you know ANYONE that tips for Takeout? I sure as hell don't. Takeout in itself saves them the bother of serving the food to you, being pleasant, offering refills, you soiling their dishes, and them collecting and cleaning up the dishes. It's a win win situation for them, that's why they usually give you a discount on it. Really, if I tipped the bugger at the door I'd be giving up my 10% off, screw that right?

No way, Jose.

No service no tip. And I'm a huge tipper.

I noticed this in Dunkin Donuts the other day. I ask for donut, guy steps back 3.5 feet, grabs donut without bending over. Steps forward and hands me donut. Asks for cash, which I give him.

Transaction time: approx 90 seconds. As I turn to leave, he points at the tip cup.

I laugh and keep walking. How dare you!

For takeout? No. If someone brings the food to your door yes, but tipping is for waiters and busboys and such (because most of their money comes from tips.)

Maybe he was just a crustyass old prick.

No tipping for take out. You tip to show that you appreciate the waiter's service. Here you are basically dealing direct with the kitchen and there really isn't a tradition of tipping the chef, although maybe there ought to be.

If you bring food to my table, you get a tip if you're not completely useless... If you are useless, you don't get less tip; you get none. Bring food to my house, you get something, especially if I live at the extreme end of your delivery circle and it's rush hour.

I had this discussion once with someone who was asking "how much am I supposed to tip the housecleaning staff at a three star hotel?"... which lead to a discussion of just who you tip... apparently everyone you see in a hotel gets money, and you're supposed to tip the hostess at a restaurant seperately... Shampoo guy at the hair dresser gets tipped seperately...

It's getting a bit stupid seeing Tip Jars at every convenience store and overpriced coffee shop.
